Cold Data Calling for iGaming FTDs and Reactivation in India

By Jagdish J Published July 2026 ~13 min read

Every India iGaming brand is sitting on two large piles of cold data. The first is the NDR pile: users who registered on the platform, went through KYC, and never made a first deposit. Depending on brand stage, this cohort is 2 to 6 times larger than the depositor base. The second is the dormant pile: players who deposited at least once but have not returned in 30, 60, or 90+ days. Both piles compound month over month as new registrations and new depositors age into cold status.

Most brands treat these two piles the same way: run a bulk WhatsApp reactivation campaign, watch open rates decay, and move on. That is fine for the top of both piles. It is not fine for the middle and the bottom, where a specific segment of high-potential players sit and require a different channel entirely. Calling is what unlocks them, and the CPFTD math works when the calling is set up correctly. Most India iGaming brands set it up incorrectly.

Well-run cold NDR calling in India iGaming produces CPFTDs of INR 800-1,600. Dormant reactivation calling produces CPFTDs of INR 400-1,200. These numbers are competitive with paid social and materially better than typical unsolicited affiliate traffic. The catch is that most brands running cold calling produce CPFTDs 2-3x these ranges because they get the dialer, script, cadence, or agent hygiene wrong.

Why Calling Beats Digital on Cold Data

Digital reactivation channels — WhatsApp, SMS, email, Meta retargeting — depend on the recipient engaging with a digital surface. A 60-day dormant player has stopped engaging with those surfaces on your brand; they may still open WhatsApp messages from others but yours is now filtered. Meta retargeting cannot find them because your custom audience shrinks as pixel data decays. SMS drops into spam.

A phone call breaks through in a way digital cannot. It is disruptive by design, forces a decision (answer or ignore), and when answered, gives an agent 30-90 seconds of undivided attention. Nothing else in the channel stack does that on cold data. This is why calling shows up in every mature India iGaming retention stack — the CPFTD math on cold data is meaningfully better than digital, provided the operation is competent.

Who to Call in the Cold Data Pile

Every cold data record is not equal. Prioritisation determines whether the calling team produces INR 500 CPFTDs or INR 3,000 CPFTDs on the same list.

NDR prioritisation (registered, never deposited):

  • Registered in the last 7 days, verified phone, high match-day activity in the region — highest priority (technically warm but often mis-categorised as cold)
  • Registered 7-30 days ago, verified phone, no digital engagement — priority tier 2
  • Registered 30-60 days ago, verified phone — priority tier 3
  • Registered 60+ days ago — priority tier 4, call selectively, most yield less than the calling cost
  • No verified phone or KYC incomplete — skip, digital-only workflow

Dormant depositor prioritisation:

  • Top-quintile lifetime depositor, dormant 30-45 days — highest priority (this is the churn-prevention play)
  • Second-quintile depositor, dormant 30-60 days — priority tier 2
  • Third-quintile depositor, dormant 30-90 days — priority tier 3
  • Fourth-quintile depositor, dormant 60-90 days — priority tier 4, call selectively
  • Bottom-quintile depositor, dormant 90+ days — skip calling, digital-only reactivation

This prioritisation is the single biggest lever on cold-data CPFTD. Brands calling their entire cold list uniformly produce mediocre numbers. Brands calling the top 2 tiers with high effort and the rest selectively produce sub-INR-1,000 CPFTDs on the NDR side and sub-INR-500 CPFTDs on dormant reactivation.

Realistic Connectivity Rates

Connectivity — defined as calls where the customer picks up and stays on the line for more than 10 seconds — is the single most-quoted and most-misunderstood metric in India iGaming outbound calling. Realistic benchmarks:

Data cohortAttempt 1 connectivityCumulative by attempt 3
NDR 7-day (warm)30-40%55-65%
NDR 7-30 days22-30%40-50%
NDR 30-60 days (cold)15-25%35-45%
Dormant depositor 30-45 days25-35%45-55%
Dormant depositor 60-90 days18-28%35-45%

Numbers below these ranges signal a specific problem — not a data-quality issue. Common causes: wrong time-of-day scheduling, dialer configured too aggressively (predictive when it should be preview), unlisted-caller-ID that gets flagged as spam, or agents dropping calls before customers finish saying hello. Fixing any one of these usually moves connectivity 5-10 percentage points.

NDR Calling — The Script That Actually Converts

Every India iGaming brand has a version of the "welcome call" script for registered-not-deposited users. Most sound identical because they are optimised for compliance boxes rather than for the actual conversion. The structure that produces sub-INR-1,600 CPFTDs on NDR looks different.

Opening (5-10 seconds): identify yourself and the brand, reference something specific about the player's registration (the bonus offer they signed up for, the sport they showed interest in, the match happening today). Do not ask "is this a good time" — that gives an easy exit. Move directly into value.

Qualification (15-30 seconds): a short conversational question that surfaces the actual objection. "What stopped you from making your first deposit?" is the highest-yield question in the entire script. Common answers: "I was not sure about the deposit process," "I did not understand the bonus terms," "I was going to but forgot," "I do not trust the brand yet." Each answer maps to a different response.

Response (30-60 seconds): address the specific objection with a specific solution. For deposit-process confusion, walk them through it live over WhatsApp share-screen. For bonus confusion, explain in plain language. For trust issues, offer a reduced-risk first deposit like INR 100 for INR 150. Never argue with an objection; solve for it.

Ask for the deposit (10-20 seconds): explicit and concrete. "Can you deposit INR 500 in the next 5 minutes and I will confirm your bonus lands correctly?" Vague asks like "give it a try when you are ready" produce single-digit conversion. Specific, time-bound, tied-to-live-support asks produce 15-30 percent conversion on connected calls.

Follow-up (5-10 seconds): if the player says yes, stay on the line while they deposit. If the player says not now, ask when to call back and log the specific reason and time. If the player says never, log it, thank them, and move on.

Dormant Reactivation — Different Script Entirely

Reactivation scripts do not work with NDR structure because dormant players already made the first-deposit decision once. What they need is a reason to come back that is specific to their history.

Opening (5-10 seconds): identify yourself and the brand, reference their deposit history specifically. "Ravi, hi, this is Rahul from AdsTown — I noticed you were an active cricket punter with us up to two months ago, and I wanted to check in personally." Use their name. Reference their specific behaviour. Do not sound scripted.

Diagnose (30-60 seconds): open-ended. "What's been going on — anything specific pulled you away, or just a quiet period?" This is where the retention-value signal actually shows up. Common answers: "I lost some money and needed a break," "I moved to another platform because of X," "I have been busy with work," "I did not like the withdrawal experience." Each answer requires different handling and much of it is not directly monetisable — sometimes the right response is to log the reason and let the player be.

For players who indicate they moved to a competitor: understand what specifically pulled them (product feature, bonus, customer experience) and offer a targeted counter — matched bonus, product improvement info, direct account handling. For players indicating a loss-related break: do not offer aggressive bonuses. Offer a small no-risk return-to-play credit and let them decide. Aggressive push here is both bad ethics and bad long-term economics. Detail on the churn-signal framework in our 7 warning signs guide.

For players indicating a busy period: light-touch offer of a match-day bonus and a follow-up over WhatsApp in 3-5 days.

Dialer Choice — Preview or Progressive, Not Predictive

Cold iGaming data does not work on predictive dialers. Predictive dialers rip through the database at 3-4x the pace of preview dialers, but they force the agent onto the call before context loads, which produces the generic "hi, this is XYZ calling from ABC" opening that converts at half the rate of a personalised opening.

Preview dialers give the agent 20-45 seconds to review the player's profile before initiating the call. The agent sees the registration date, the bonus the player signed up for, the sport the player showed interest in, any incomplete deposit attempts, and any previous call history. All of that context feeds a personalised opening that meaningfully improves connectivity-to-conversion rate.

Progressive dialers sit in between and are appropriate for lower-priority tiers where personalisation matters less. The right stack is preview for tiers 1-2, progressive for tier 3, and skip everything else. Predictive is only appropriate for pure information-gathering calls where conversion is not the goal.

The tradeoff: preview dialers produce 60-90 dials per agent per day, progressive produce 100-140, predictive produce 200+. For cold iGaming data, the conversion rate difference more than pays for the volume drop. Detail in the calling service.

Multi-Attempt Cadence

Single-attempt cold calling captures 15-25 percent of a list. Proper multi-attempt cadence gets to 35-55 percent. The cadence that works:

  • Attempt 1: immediately when the record hits the queue (registration for NDR, dormancy trigger for reactivation). Time-of-day match to when the player originally engaged if that data exists
  • Attempt 2: 24-72 hours after attempt 1, ideally at a different time-of-day (if attempt 1 was evening, attempt 2 is afternoon)
  • Attempt 3: 5-10 days after attempt 2, again shifting time-of-day
  • Attempt 4 (high-value only): 14 days after attempt 3, with an escalated offer
  • Drop: any record that has hit 4 no-connects is moved to digital-only reactivation queue

The failure mode most brands hit: retrying attempt 2 within 3 hours of attempt 1. This burns the list and trains the customer that your number is a nuisance. The 24-hour minimum between attempts is not arbitrary — it is what preserves list quality across the full cadence.

Agent Staffing and Daily Volume

A properly-staffed cold-data calling team for a Tier 2 India iGaming brand looks like:

  • 4-8 agents depending on FTD volume target and dormant depositor base size
  • 60-120 dials per agent per day depending on dialer type
  • INR 25-40K monthly salary per agent depending on experience
  • 1 team lead per 6-8 agents for QA, script iteration, and daily huddles
  • Bilingual capability (Hindi and English minimum; add Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali for brands with regional focus)
  • Match-day flexibility for scaled staffing during IPL and ICC events

Total monthly cost for a 6-agent team including infrastructure: INR 2.5-4L. Expected FTD output on properly-prioritised cold data: 150-350 FTDs monthly. Net CPFTD from the calling team including operational overhead: INR 800-1,600 for NDR-heavy books, INR 400-1,200 for dormant-heavy books.

TRAI, DND, and India-Specific Compliance

Outbound calling in India operates under TRAI regulations administered through DLT registration. For iGaming brands, the practical workflow:

  • DLT-registered principal entity and content templates for any WhatsApp/SMS accompanying the call
  • Consent captured at registration covers outbound service and marketing calls within a documented business relationship
  • National Do Not Call (NDNC) registry scrubbing on lists before dialing — usually handled by the dialer platform
  • Explicit revocation logging: any player who says "do not call again" is added to a permanent brand-level do-not-call list
  • Documented call recording disclosure per regulatory norm (the "this call may be recorded" line at the start)
  • State-level compliance for regions where iGaming has additional restrictions (Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu among others)

Non-compliance risks: TRAI penalties, reputational risk, and player-side complaints that can escalate to consumer forum actions. Compliance is not optional at any brand scale.

Common Failure Modes

  • Predictive dialer on cold iGaming data. Burns the list, produces generic openings, ~2x higher CPFTDs than preview dialer
  • Uniform script for NDR and dormant reactivation. Two different problems require two different scripts; agents get confused, conversion drops on both
  • Retrying attempt 2 within 3 hours of attempt 1. Burns the list, trains customer to ignore the number
  • Calling the entire cold pile uniformly. Wastes budget on low-yield tiers; the top 20 percent produces 60-70 percent of FTDs
  • Wrong time-of-day. Calling salaried India players between 10 AM and 6 PM produces significantly lower connectivity than 7-10 PM or Saturday/Sunday afternoons
  • Over-scripting. Agents reading verbatim from a script sound robotic and drop off inside 30 seconds. Bullet-point structure with agent flexibility produces materially better outcomes
  • No consent revocation logging. Same player getting called again after asking not to be, damaging both compliance posture and brand perception

Reporting That Ties Calling to FTDs

Standard calling reports lead with dial volume, connect rate, and talk time. For iGaming, the metrics that matter for unit economics:

  • CPFTD by data cohort (NDR vs dormant, warm vs cold, priority tier)
  • Connect-to-FTD conversion rate on connected calls (measures agent quality, not dialer quality)
  • Time-from-call-to-deposit for players who deposit after being called (should be under 24 hours for well-run programmes)
  • Second-deposit rate on calling-driven FTDs at Day 30 (measures whether the calling is producing durable depositors or one-time conversions)
  • Do-not-call requests as a percentage of connected calls (leading indicator of over-aggressive scripting or wrong list targeting)
  • Cost per attempt vs cost per FTD (attempt-level view surfaces where the pipeline actually breaks)

How AdsTown Runs Cold Data Calling

We build and operate cold-data calling programmes for India iGaming brands as part of a broader in-house customer support and retention stack. Agent hiring and training, dialer setup and integration, DLT and compliance handling, script development and iteration, cadence orchestration, and CRM-integrated FTD reporting.

Cold calling works best when integrated with the wider retention layer covered in our player retention guide and the warning-signs framework. WhatsApp handles the top of the funnel where digital reactivation still works; calling picks up the middle and top tiers where digital has stopped delivering.

If your existing calling operation is producing CPFTDs above INR 2,000 or connectivity below 15 percent, the fix is usually not the team — it is the dialer, script, cadence, or prioritisation setup. That diagnostic conversation starts at the contact page.

FAQ

Cold data calling

Two cohorts. First, non-depositors: users who registered on the platform but never made a first deposit (NDR — Not Deposited Register). Second, dormant depositors: players who deposited at least once but have not returned in 30, 60, or 90+ days. Both cohorts share the property that recency-based channels are producing diminishing returns because the audience has stopped engaging with digital touchpoints.
First-attempt connectivity on 60-day-old registered-never-deposited data typically lands at 15-25 percent when calls exceed 10 seconds. By attempt 3 with proper cadence, cumulative connectivity reaches 35-45 percent. On dormant depositors, first-attempt connectivity is higher — 25-35 percent — because these are people who already engaged with the brand once.
For NDR cold calling with proper script, cadence and dialer setup, CPFTD lands at INR 800-1,600 per FTD. For dormant reactivation, CPFTD sits at INR 400-1,200. Both ranges assume a properly built calling team producing 60-120 dials per agent per day. Brands with poor script discipline or over-scripted agents typically see CPFTDs 2-3x these numbers.
Preview or progressive dialers, not predictive. Cold iGaming data needs 30-60 seconds of pre-call review so the agent can personalise the opening. Predictive dialers rip through the database at high volume but strip context, producing scripts that sound generic and connectivity that burns the list fast.
Calls to numbers registered on the National Do Not Call (NDNC) registry require documented consent. Player consent captured at registration typically covers outbound calling within a documented business relationship. Calling non-registered numbers or numbers with revoked consent triggers TRAI penalties. The practical workflow is DLT-scrubbed lists filtered against DND status before dialing.
For NDR: attempt 1 within 48 hours of registration if possible; attempts 2-3 spaced 3-5 days apart during high-connectivity windows. For dormant reactivation: attempt 1 as soon as the 30-day dormancy trigger fires; attempt 2 at day 3 if no connect; attempt 3 at day 10; drop the number if no connect by attempt 4. Higher-value dormant players get 5-6 attempts.
